Premier League CEO shocks fans with statement about Liverpool not receiving trophy despite sealing title

Liverpool fans packed Anfield in anticipation of a title celebration after their dominant 5-1 win over Tottenham on April 27, a victory that secured the Premier League crown with four games to spare. Yet, to the shock of many, the Reds were not presented with the Premier League trophy immediately after the match.
Premier League CEO Richard Masters addressed the situation in a lengthy and surprising statement following the match. “First of all, I want to extend my congratulations to Liverpool Football Club, their players, staff, and incredible fans,” Masters began. “Their consistency, excellence, and fighting spirit this season have been remarkable. However, as per long-standing Premier League protocols, the trophy presentation is reserved for the final home game of the champion’s season.”
He continued, explaining the logic behind the rule: “This policy is in place to ensure that the crowning moment of the champions is a complete and fitting celebration, not just for the club and players, but also for the wider Premier League community watching around the world. It gives us time to prepare a full ceremony worthy of the achievement.”
“While I fully understand the excitement and emotional momentum after clinching the title early, it’s crucial to maintain the consistency and grandeur of the trophy presentation,” Masters said.
“Liverpool will receive the Premier League trophy in front of their supporters after their final home match of the season, against Crystal Palace on Liverpool’s performance this season has been historic. Under new manager Arne Slot, they have matched Manchester United’s record of 20 English league titles. The Reds have suffered only two league defeats all season a 0-1 loss to Nottingham Forest in September 2024 and a 2-3 setback against Fulham in April.
“Liverpool’s achievement this season
has elevated the standards of excellence in the Premier League,” Masters added. “It is a season that will be remembered not only for the silverware but for the style and spirit with which they competed. They have honored the legacy of Jurgen Klopp and built a new era under Arne Slot.”
Slot, who became the first Dutch manager to win the Premier League and only the sixth manager to claim the title in his debut season, remained humble after the triumph. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said, “It’s not just my work. It’s the work of the players, the staff, and the incredible foundation Jurgen Klopp and Pepijn Lijnders left behind.”
“The culture of the team, the work rate, and the quality are all outstanding,” Slot continued. “We started the season very well, and perhaps it helped that Manchester City had a difficult patch, something we haven’t seen from them in five years.”
Masters concluded his statement by addressing Liverpool’s broader impact:
“What Liverpool has done this season transcends just winning. They have inspired millions, raised the level of competition, and reminded us all why the Premier League is the most watched league in the world. We look forward to honoring them properly when they lift the trophy at Anfield later this month.”
For now, Liverpool fans must wait just a few more weeks for the official ceremony
