Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola voiced his anger over offensive chants aimed at Phil Foden’s mother by some Manchester United fans during the Manchester derby. While there was no visible on-field conflict between the players, a section of United supporters repeatedly insulted Foden throughout the match, which ended in a goalless 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.

Guardiola was quick to denounce the behavior, stressing that although it does not reflect the values of Manchester United as a club, it remains completely unacceptable. “It’s a lack of class, and they should be ashamed,” he said, emphasizing the global visibility of football and the importance of maintaining integrity and respect.

Foden had a challenging game, struggling to make an impact before being substituted for Jack Grealish. Guardiola rejected the idea that Foden was lacking confidence, highlighting the player’s enthusiasm and positive attitude in training. He assured that Foden’s talent and form would return, pointing to his pivotal role in City’s title win last season.

The manager reiterated that the team’s current difficulties are a collective concern, not solely Foden’s, and that the quality is still present. “When the team is not playing at the level that we had, it looks like everyone is not what they were,” he remarked. Guardiola remains determined to finish the season strongly, with the FA Cup semi-finals and eight remaining league matches offering chances for recovery and improvement.

Guardiola’s message was firm: Foden will recover, and the team will strive to make the most of the remaining fixtures. “Everyone is going to give everything, and learning for the guys who played every single game, how they impacted, and this is what they’re going to do.”
