Manchester United, a club with a long history of triumph, is currently facing a series of challenges. Despite its rich legacy and abundant talent, recent performances have been underwhelming, prompting scrutiny from football analysts worldwide.

One of the most vocal critics has been former manager José Mourinho. During his time at Old Trafford, Mourinho frequently emphasized the necessity for significant changes within the club. He highlighted that unless these core issues were addressed, even a club with Manchester United’s history would find it hard to reclaim its former glory in the Premier League. Mourinho’s criticisms extended beyond just on-field tactics, addressing broader concerns about the club’s approach and organizational structure.

Recent reviews have corroborated Mourinho’s concerns. A key issue has been the club’s financial mismanagement. From 2021 to 2024, Manchester United faced losses surpassing £300 million. These financial challenges have been attributed to declining broadcast revenue due to poor on-pitch performances and mismanagement of player signings. The club’s approach of spending heavily on high-profile players without a coherent strategy has led to disappointing outcomes and financial strain.

On the tactical side, current manager Ruben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation has faced difficulties. Players like Bruno Fernandes, though individually talented, have struggled to adapt to this system, leading to inconsistent performances. The absence of specialized wing-backs and central midfielders has worsened these tactical problems.

Furthermore, the club’s injury woes have been concerning. With only seven players maintaining fitness throughout the season, Manchester United has resorted to creating predictive models to anticipate and mitigate injuries. This tactic highlights the club’s tendency to react to issues rather than addressing their underlying causes.

These issues have led to public frustration from club legends. Gary Neville, commenting on the situation, described the management as an “absolute mess,” criticizing the disorder both on and off the field.

Given these difficulties, it is clear that Manchester United’s main problem lies in its lack of a unified and adaptable strategy. The club’s reluctance to modernize its football operations and overall approach has left it trailing behind its rivals. Mourinho’s earlier calls for structural reforms have never been more pertinent. To regain their place as Premier League champions, Manchester United needs a full overhaul, addressing both tactical and managerial issues. Only by embracing change and innovation can they aspire to return to the top of English football.
