Referee Simon Hooper initially awarded a penalty, but VAR official John Brooks advised a review on the pitchside monitor. Video evidence revealed that while Agbadou lunged, the contact wasn’t strong enough to constitute a foul, leading Hooper to reverse his initial decision. However, instead of awarding a free kick to Wolves and issuing a caution to Jota for simulation, Hooper resumed play with a drop ball, which confused some Wolves players. In a statement on X, the Premier League’s Match Centre clarified: “VAR reviewed the referee’s decision to give a penalty to Liverpool for Agbadou’s challenge on Jota and concluded that any contact was not caused by Agbadou.
