Liverpool achieved something unprecedented in the club’s history during the first Merseyside derby of the season. On Wednesday evening, Everton hosted Arne Slot at Goodison Park for the first and last time since he took over as Liverpool manager last year, succeeding club legend Jurgen Klopp.

The stakes were incredibly high as Liverpool sought to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League, while Everton aimed to build on their strong form under new manager David Moyes.

Even before the match began, Liverpool raised the significance of the game by doing something they had never done in any previous encounter with Everton.

Leading up to the match, there were concerns about Liverpool playing without key defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had been substituted early in the Premier League match against Bournemouth two weeks earlier.

When the teams for Wednesday’s game were announced, Liverpool fans were disappointed to see Alexander-Arnold on the bench, with Conor Bradley taking his place in the starting lineup.

With Alexander-Arnold not starting, this marked the first time in Liverpool’s history that they fielded a lineup in a top-flight match against Everton without any English players in the starting XI.

However, four English players were named on the bench, including Alexander-Arnold, along with Jarell Quansah, Harvey Elliott, and Curtis Jones.

Regarding Alexander-Arnold’s injury before the match, Slot told TNT Sports: “Trent was not close at all to start but he can come in for a few minutes.

“It is nice to have him because in the few games he has been on the bench he has come in and been special. We have more than a few good substitutes to make but it is good to have him too.

“If you look at our schedule we have five games in 15 days. If I would have played the starters at Plymouth that would have been six in 18 and if we went through it would have been seven in 21 days. It goes on and on and on – sometimes players need a rest.”
