Andrey Santos has disclosed his preferred position as Chelsea makes plans for his future.

It seems Chelsea is preparing for Santos to play a key role under the guidance of new head coach Enzo Maresca in the upcoming season.

The Brazilian midfielder joined Chelsea in January 2023 but has yet to make his debut for the first team. Since his signing, he has had loan spells at Vasco da Gama and Nottingham Forest, and in February 2024, he moved to Strasbourg.

Last summer, the 20-year-old extended his stay with Strasbourg—part of the BlueCo ownership group, which also owns Chelsea—through to the end of the current season. Santos has had an impressive season for Strasbourg, netting eight goals and providing two assists in 20 appearances across all competitions.

In July of last year, Santos previously shared his preferred position, offering insight into where he envisions himself fitting into Maresca’s tactical setup. He had been part of Chelsea’s pre-season tour that summer and expressed confidence in playing as a defensive midfielder.

Speaking to Premier League Brazil, he said: “Maresca uses a 3-2-5 formation, if I’m not mistaken, with the full-back positioned inside. I played in a similar setup under coach Paulo Victor (Gomes) with Brazil’s U-15 and U-17 teams.

“As a defensive midfielder, you take control of the game from the front. I feel comfortable and well-adapted to playing as the first defensive midfielder alongside the full-back. I really enjoy dictating the tempo of the match.”
