Big clash between Modric and Vinicius Junior at Leganès: What really happened

Real Madrid barely managed to secure a victory against Leganès in the Copa del Rey this Wednesday. In this tense match, Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior engaged in a heated exchange towards the end. Although the incident wasn’t shown live on television, Cadena SER has provided insight into what occurred.
This result may not sit well with the Madrid supporters. On Wednesday evening, playing away at Estadio Municipal de Butarque, Carlo Ancelotti’s side struggled significantly in their Copa del Rey quarter-final match. The defense was greatly weakened by the absences of David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger, and Lucas Vazquez—who faced a last-minute issue before the Leganès game—leaving Real Madrid to depend on young players like Jacobo Ramon (who had a dull performance) and Raul Asensio. In this game, where the collective effort of all players was required, Vinicius’ actions had a negative impact.
What actually transpired?

As reported by Marca and Cadena SER, the tension began in the final five minutes of regular time. Leganès had possession of the ball and launched a counter-attack that led to a corner. Luka Modrić then turned to Vinícius and asked him to track back and help out defensively. Vinícius, who had come on during the second half, did not take kindly to this request and responded to his captain, prompting Modrić to raise his voice and scold him publicly.
On the sidelines, Carlo Ancelotti immediately expressed his disapproval of Vinicius’ reaction, urging him to show respect for the veteran Madrid player, who will soon be 40, had scored the opening goal of the match, and continued to push forward to help defensively as the game entered stoppage time. According to Marca’s sources, Luka Modrić was repeatedly frustrated by Vinícius’ lack of defensive contribution.

On two occasions, the Croatian captain asked Vinícius to track back, but the Brazilian ignored him. On the third occasion, when Modrić once again asked him to do so, Vinícius responded with a gesture, seemingly saying, “What do you want from me?”. At this point, Modrić, completely exasperated by the behavior of a player who was expected to lead the team, shouted, “Go to hell,” as confirmed by Cadena SER.
