Manchester United is set to enter a new era with Ruben Amorim at the helm, and former United player Dwight Yorke has already pinpointed a player he believes would be the ideal marquee signing to begin this fresh chapter. Yorke has urged the club to target Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, a striker he feels holds untapped potential that could revolutionize United’s attacking fortunes.

This comes after a difficult period for the Red Devils, which led to Erik ten Hag being dismissed from his managerial role following a series of disappointing performances. United earned just 11 points from their first nine Premier League matches, with their struggles in front of goal exacerbating the situation. Their current forward options, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, have managed only two league goals between them, underlining the urgent need for reinforcements.

Amorim, who will officially take over during the November international break, is set to make his managerial debut against Ipswich Town. Known for his dynamic tactics and ability to nurture young talent, the Portuguese coach is expected to implement significant changes to the squad. Dwight Yorke believes one of Amorim’s main priorities should be securing a powerful presence up front, and he believes Nunez is the perfect candidate for the role.

“If I could handpick a number nine for Manchester United, I’d make a bold move for Darwin Nunez from Liverpool,” Yorke said in a recent interview. “Some may question this suggestion due to his inconsistent form, but I see a player with immense potential. He’s got the physical attributes, the aggression, and the hunger that United desperately need in attack. Given regular game time, I’m confident he could flourish and become one of the Premier League’s most dominant forwards.”

Nunez, who transferred to Liverpool from Benfica for £85 million in 2022, has shown glimpses of brilliance but has struggled with consistency. This season, the 25-year-old has netted just once in the Premier League, which has led to questions about his effectiveness. Nonetheless, Yorke firmly believes Nunez has the qualities to thrive in a system tailored to his strengths.

“Nunez is someone I’d take a gamble on,” Yorke continued. “United need a striker who not only has technical ability but also brings a physical edge. While players like Ollie Watkins are impressive, Nunez has a unique presence that can unsettle defenses. With consistent opportunities, I believe he could truly dominate in this league.” Although Nunez remains under contract with Liverpool until 2028, there is ongoing speculation about his long-term future. Reports suggest Liverpool might seek another striker by 2025, potentially allowing Nunez to seek a new challenge elsewhere. Whether United would pursue such a high-profile target from a direct rival remains uncertain, but Yorke’s endorsement certainly adds an interesting dimension to the debate.

Meanwhile, Amorim is reportedly planning a major shake-up of the United squad, with up to four players potentially leaving by January. Sources suggest that Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Casemiro, and Antony are among those Amorim is willing to sell.

This decision to part ways with prominent players seems driven by a desire to free up funds and reshape the squad. Casemiro and Antony, who earn £350,000 and £200,000 per week respectively, are expected to be valued around £25 million each in the transfer market. Eriksen and Lindelof’s contracts are set to expire next summer, which may prompt potential suitors to hold off and avoid paying transfer fees.

Amorim’s ambitious approach signals a clear intent to rejuvenate a struggling United side. Whether through the pursuit of a high-profile signing like Nunez or a complete squad overhaul, the coming months will be crucial in determining the future direction of Manchester United under their new manager.
