BBC reporter provides update on Liverpool vs Man Utd as game at risk of being called off

An update has emerged concerning Liverpool’s upcoming match against Manchester United after the Met Office issued an amber weather warning ahead of the highly anticipated fixture.

A BBC reporter has shared an update on the match, which may be canceled due to adverse weather conditions. The Met Office issued an amber weather warning, predicting heavy snow, freezing rain, and disruptions to public transport.

Leading up to Sunday’s Premier League fixture, concerns arose about the possibility of a postponement. Temperatures were forecasted to drop below freezing near Anfield early on Sunday, and the Met Office alerted the public to hazardous travel conditions. Persistent snow, potentially accumulating up to 7cm, and freezing rain, especially in Wales and the southern Pennines, were expected.

The decision about the match has been postponed until midday, with the Safety Advisory Group scheduled to reconvene due to anticipated changes in the weather. Initially, the group was set to meet at 9 am to assess the situation, focusing on stadium access safety, although the pitch and stadium conditions were not a concern. Further discussions are planned for 11:45 am, with representatives from both clubs, Merseyside Police, and Liverpool City Council expected to attend.

Liverpool has issued a further update regarding the situation.

The statement said: “A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions ahead of today’s match against Manchester United at Anfield.

“Currently, the match is set to go ahead as planned, and all efforts are being made to ensure it proceeds. Another safety meeting will be held at midday to review the latest conditions.

“We will update supporters as soon as possible. Please stay safe, Reds.”

This update comes after the Merseyside derby was postponed in December due to severe weather and strong winds, which caused significant travel disruptions in the Merseyside area.

A Safety Advisory Group meeting was held at Goodison Park, where it was decided that, due to local safety concerns and an amber severe wind warning, the match would be postponed for safety reasons.
