players furious with Andrew Madley after controversial decision in the final moments vs Liverpool

Newcastle United players and fans were left seething with referee Andrew Madley after he made a controversial call in the final moments of their match against Liverpool.
On Wednesday night, Premier League leaders Liverpool visited St. James’ Park, aiming to extend their strong run under new manager Arne Slot. Newcastle took the lead in the 35th minute through Alexander Isak, but Curtis Jones equalized early in the second half.
The Magpies regained the advantage with a goal from Anthony Gordon, only for Mohamed Salah to score twice, in the 68th and 83rd minutes, putting Liverpool ahead 3-2.
However, the Reds couldn’t secure the victory, as a mistake by goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher allowed Fabian Schar to score late, ensuring a dramatic 3-3 draw. In stoppage time, controversy erupted when referee Andrew Madley blew the final whistle during a Newcastle counterattack, with the clock at 95:10, just beyond the allocated five minutes of added time.
Newcastle players, including Schar, Nick Pope, and Bruno Guimaraes, protested vehemently, and Pope was booked for his reaction. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe later expressed surprise at the decision, suggesting the stoppage time should have been extended due to delays during added time.
Howe also voiced concerns over a potential penalty claim when Isak went down under a challenge from Jarell Quansah and questioned why Virgil van Dijk escaped punishment for a robust challenge on Anthony Gordon. While VAR reviewed both incidents and found no grounds for action, Howe admitted he was surprised by the decisions.
Newcastle, still processing the drama of the match, will return to Premier League action this Saturday against Brentford.
