Liverpool fans have voiced their dissatisfaction with Darwin Núñez following his underwhelming performance in the 3-3 draw against Newcastle United on December 4 at St. James’ Park. The Uruguayan forward, who has struggled to find form this season, faced heavy criticism on social media, with some supporters even calling for his departure from the club.

The match was a dramatic spectacle, with both teams showcasing moments of brilliance and frailty. Newcastle opened the scoring in the 35th minute through a spectacular strike by Alexander Isak, while Liverpool equalized early in the second half when Curtis Jones calmly finished in the 50th minute.

Newcastle regained the lead in the 62nd minute with a well-taken goal by Anthony Gordon. However, Mohamed Salah once again demonstrated his class, scoring twice in the 68th and 83rd minutes to give Liverpool the lead. Just as victory seemed secure, a mistake from Caoimhin Kelleher allowed Fabian Schär to score from a tight angle in the 90th minute, resulting in a shared point for both sides.

While Salah earned widespread praise for his match-winning contributions, Núñez faced intense scrutiny for his lack of impact. The striker managed just eight passes with a low accuracy of 67%, failed to create any chances, missed two significant opportunities, and registered no shots on target from three attempts. His struggles in duels, losing seven throughout the game, further highlighted his poor display.

This season, Núñez’s inconsistency has become a growing concern. In 18 appearances across all competitions, he has only managed three goals and two assists—a disappointing return for a player expected to lead Liverpool’s attack. Fans on X expressed their frustration:

– “Biggest flop we’ve ever had, not good at anything.”

– “Rip up Núñez’s contract to give to Salah.”

– “Back to being dogs**t again. How did he even make it as a striker hahahaha.”

– “Darwin Núñez missed 2 BIG chances today. He also had the least touches of any outfield player that played 90 minutes today. There are better options out there & the club has to start looking at them seriously.”

Despite Núñez’s performance, Liverpool’s overall display had its positives. They dominated possession with 59%, completed 446 passes with 87% accuracy, and attempted 16 shots, hitting the woodwork twice. Newcastle, with 41% possession, attempted 17 shots and edged Liverpool on xG, 1.72 to 1.44.

The draw leaves Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table with 35 points from 14 games, seven points clear of Chelsea. However, Núñez’s struggles and the defensive lapses that cost Liverpool two points serve as a reminder of the areas requiring improvement as they look to sustain their title charge.
