Ruben Amorim makes drastic decision after just two matches as Man Utd head coach

Ruben Amorim has introduced a major change behind the scenes at Manchester United as he looks to kick-start their season.
Ruben Amorim, 39, officially began his role as Manchester United head coach during the recent international break, taking over from Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed last month. His appointment coincided with what seemed like a favorable run of fixtures, but the start of his tenure has been anything but smooth.
In his first match, United managed only a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town, followed by a hard-fought 3-2 comeback victory over Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt in the Europa League. Up next, the Red Devils face a Premier League clash against relegation-threatened Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Amorim has reportedly implemented a significant change at United’s Carrington training ground. According to *The Telegraph*, he has introduced specialized coaching for different positional groups, assigning staff members to work exclusively with defenders, midfielders, and forwards. This approach marks a shift from Ten Hag’s method, where the first-team coach oversaw full-squad training sessions.
Amorim brought several trusted staff members from his time at Sporting CP, including Carlos Fernandes, Jorge Vital, Adelio Cândido, Emanuel Ferro, and Paulo Barreira. These coaches join existing first-team staff members Darren Fletcher, Andreas Georgson, and Craig Mawson.
The Portuguese coach has emphasized the importance of his staff in helping the squad adapt to his preferred 3-4-3 formation and style of play. “I was a football player,” Amorim explained. “Videos more than 12 minutes? Forget it! Because of concentration. Instead, we walk through things, jog, and show videos in parts. Each coach has a specific role. For example, Carlos works with the strikers. They handle individual moments, and maybe they are even more important than me.”
Following the draw with Ipswich, Amorim urged patience as his squad adjusts to his methods. “It’s hard to expect anything now without time,” he said. “Some players train the day after matches to work on our ideas, and we rotate them. Today, I saw players trying to implement what we’ve discussed, even in tough moments. That’s crucial.”
He acknowledged fans’ frustration but emphasized the scale of changes being made. “We’re changing a lot during a busy schedule. This will take time, and we will suffer during this period. But we will try to win games along the way. I know results are important.”
