Manchester United fans have been left shocked at Ruben Amorim’s first starting XI as manager.

Manchester United face Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Sunday afternoon, with Amorim set to implement his expected 3-4-3 system in his first game as head coach. After a week of training, the starting lineup features several surprises, sparking discussion among fans.

Amad Diallo appears to be deployed as a right wing-back, with Diogo Dalot operating on the left. Noussair Mazraoui has been included in the lineup but is seemingly part of a back three alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Jonny Evans. In attack, Bruno Fernandes is set to play on the right, while Marcus Rashford takes the central striker role over Rasmus Højlund.

Some fans have speculated the lineup could transition into a back four, though this would be unexpected given Amorim’s consistent use of a three-defender system during his time at Sporting Lisbon.

In his first interview as United manager, Amorim emphasized that building the squad’s “character” takes precedence over any specific tactical system. He explained, “A lot of people talk about 3-4-3 or 4-3-3, but for me, being part of Manchester United is about the character of the players and their understanding of the club. Before focusing on tactics or pressing, we need to establish principles, identity, and the character that defined this club in the past.”

This focus on character and identity signals Amorim’s intent to build a strong foundation before refining his tactical approach at United.
