Jurgen Klopp Made me Feel Unwanted at Liverpool – I’d Played 304 Games For Him

Jordan Henderson’s journey has been one of dedication, leadership, and transformation, making him a pivotal figure in Liverpool’s history and a significant contributor to the Jurgen Klopp era. Now, as he enters the twilight of his career, his future remains an intriguing topic, with various pathways potentially awaiting him.
Henderson’s 12-year spell at Liverpool saw him evolve from a young, promising midfielder into one of the club’s most iconic captains. Under Klopp, he played a vital role in the Reds’ resurgence, lifting multiple trophies, including the Champions League and Premier League titles. Klopp’s trust in Henderson as a captain symbolized their shared ethos: commitment, teamwork, and an insatiable drive for success.
Henderson’s Acrimonious Anfield Exit
Despite his immense contributions, Henderson’s departure in 2023 to Al-Ettifaq marked a controversial chapter. His move drew criticism, given his prior advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, which contrasted with the socio-political climate in Saudi Arabia. On the pitch, his stint was less than ideal, leading to his return to Europe with Ajax, where he continues to play a significant role.
“He’s captain of my side because he was captain when I arrived here, and I saw no need to change it – that’s maybe the biggest compliment. I obviously didn’t know Hendo when I arrived here; I knew him as a player but not as a person. He brings everything you need to lead a football team.”
Henderson has been a consistent presence for Ajax this season, appearing in 19 matches and contributing two assists. While the 34-year-old remains a reliable performer, he has hinted that his playing days may soon give way to a post-playing career.
“I felt as though my value or the want for me to stay, with the manager and within the club, maybe it had shifted. I knew that time would come at some point. I didn’t think it would be now. And I had to accept that.”
His recent comments suggest he is contemplating a future in coaching, though he remains focused on his current role at Ajax. With his contract running until 2025, Henderson has expressed an openness to ending his career in Amsterdam, where he has found stability and a leadership role.
Henderson’s Future Career Options
Should Henderson transition into coaching, he would join a growing list of former England internationals who have entered the managerial arena, including Steven Gerrard, Michael Carrick, and Wayne Rooney. Henderson’s leadership qualities, tactical understanding, and experience at the highest level make him a strong candidate for future managerial success.
“I am thinking about it, but I haven’t decided yet. I am focusing on the last years of my career first. When my contract here expires, I will be 36 years old. Then I will see how I am physically and what Ajax wants. I may end my career here. It could very well be.”
A potential return to Sunderland, either as a player or in a coaching capacity, could also be on the cards, given his deep connection to his boyhood club. Alternatively, he might seek opportunities within Ajax’s renowned youth development system, where he could help shape the next generation of talent.
Henderson’s future, whether on the pitch or the sidelines, promises to be as impactful as his playing career. His leadership and understanding of the game position him as a valuable asset in any role he chooses to pursue. For now, he remains a vital figure at Ajax, but his next steps will undoubtedly capture the attention of football fans worldwide.
