Former Premier League goalkeeper and Republic of Ireland legend Shay Given has urged Liverpool backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to consider leaving Anfield for a move that would allow him to fulfill his potential as a first-choice keeper.

Given, who holds Kelleher in high regard, believes the 25-year-old has the talent to become a world-class goalkeeper but is being held back by his limited playing time behind Liverpool’s star shot-stopper, Alisson Becker. In an interview with *The Mirror*, Given praised Kelleher’s abilities, noting his impressive performances, particularly during the 2022 League Cup final, where Kelleher played a key role in Liverpool’s victory over Chelsea.

“Kelleher played 26 games last season and showed he has the quality to be a No. 1 at this level,” Given said. “However, he’s turning 26 soon, and it’s clear that staying at Liverpool will not allow him to reach his full potential.”

Given acknowledged that Kelleher’s situation at Liverpool, with Alisson firmly established as the club’s undisputed number one, is preventing the Irish goalkeeper from getting the regular playing time he needs. “Every player wants to feel they have a genuine shot at competing for a starting role,” Given stated. “For Caoimhin, though, it’s obvious that he’ll always be second to Alisson, who is one of the best in the world.”

While recognizing Kelleher’s loyalty to Liverpool, Given emphasized that the goalkeeper must prioritize his development. “He has been a great servant to Liverpool, but the reality is that he needs regular game time to grow. If that means pushing for a move, then so be it,” Given said. “In ten years, he won’t want to look back and regret not seizing the chance to establish himself as a top-level goalkeeper.”

Since making his debut for Liverpool in 2019, Kelleher has made 55 appearances and kept 19 clean sheets. Despite these impressive statistics, he has mostly been used as a backup, with Alisson continuing as the first-choice keeper. Liverpool reportedly turned down offers for Kelleher last summer, notably from Nottingham Forest, but the goalkeeper’s future remains uncertain, particularly with the club’s recent acquisition of Giorgi Mamardashvili, seen by many as Alisson’s eventual successor.

Kelleher has privately expressed his desire to move on in search of more regular first-team opportunities, and with clubs showing interest in the Irish international, it seems likely that he will seek a new challenge next summer.
