David De Gea’s Decision To Turn Down A Remarkable Return To A Premier League Club Has Caught Many By Surprise, As He Has Chosen To Make A Surprising Move Back To His Former Club. While Players Were Astonished By The Decision, Manager Ten Hag Remained Unperturbed.

David de Gea has reportedly declined an offer to join a Premier League club during the January transfer window. The Spanish goalkeeper, who concluded a distinguished 12-year run with Manchester United last summer, is currently without a club. Although he had been in discussions regarding a possible move to Saudi Arabia, a deal in the Middle Eastern league has yet to materialize.
Nottingham Forest recently sought to bring De Gea into their squad, proposing a chance for him to play regularly until the end of the season. Despite the appeal of consistent playing time, the 33-year-old decided not to accept the club’s short-term contract offer, opting instead to explore other options.
Alongside their interest in De Gea, Nottingham Forest also inquired about Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, who recently lost his starting spot to David Raya. Initially, Forest had targeted Ramsdale, but ultimately they signed Matz Sels from Strasbourg for £5.1 million on the final day of the transfer window, securing the goalkeeper on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
With the addition of Sels, Forest’s goalkeeper lineup now includes Matt Turner, Wayne Hennessey, and Odysseas Vlachodimos. As a free agent, De Gea remains available to join a club outside the regular transfer periods, keeping his options open for a new opportunity.
During his time at Manchester United, De Gea made 545 appearances in all competitions and played an instrumental role in the team’s successes. He also earned 45 caps for the Spanish national team, further underscoring his extensive experience. Now, as he weighs his next move carefully, De Gea continues to be an attractive prospect for clubs in need of a seasoned goalkeeper.
By turning down Nottingham Forest’s short-term offer, De Gea has shown his intent to find the right fit for the next phase of his career. His careful approach to selecting his next club highlights his focus on securing a meaningful role, even as clubs in Saudi Arabia and other leagues express interest.
