Manchester United have officially appointed Ruben Amorim as their manager following Erik ten Hag’s departure.

The club announced on Friday lunchtime that Amorim, 39, will take on the role of head coach, pending work visa approval. He has signed a contract running until 2027, with an option to extend for an additional year.

In a statement, Manchester United expressed their excitement: “Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Rúben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements. He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. Rúben will start on Monday, 11 November.”

The club praised Amorim as “one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.” The Portuguese manager brings a decorated background, having twice won the Primeira Liga with Sporting CP, including their first league title in 19 years.

Until Amorim joins, Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to lead United, overseeing matches against Chelsea, PAOK, and Leicester City. Amorim’s first match in charge will be an away game against Ipswich on November 24, following the international break. It remains uncertain if van Nistelrooy will take on a new position within the club after Amorim’s arrival.

Sporting confirmed the agreement in their own statement, revealing that United will pay a fee of €11m (£9.25m) for Amorim. United’s poor start to the season, marked by four Premier League losses, including a 2-1 defeat to West Ham, led to Ten Hag’s dismissal and Amorim’s subsequent appointment.

Amorim, who has previously been linked with clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea, and West Ham, rose to prominence during his time at Braga and later achieved success with Sporting CP, winning league titles in 2021 and last season. The announcement came as a surprise, as Amorim had indicated he would reveal his decision after Sporting’s game against Estrela Amadora on Friday evening.
