Ballon d’Or 2024 : contested, Rodri breaks the silence !

The “Ballon d’Or for Rodri is far from being universally accepted.” Three days after the announcement, discussions continue, with many arguing that Vinicius Jr. was more deserving. In response to the backlash, the Spanish international sought to clarify his stance. While he is among the favorites, not all observers agree he should win the 2024 award. Rodri’s victory represents recognition for his impressive season with Manchester City and the national team, yet he faces criticism from various players who feel he should not be the recipient. This sentiment is not limited to Real Madrid players.
It’s important to note that several football figures, including Clarence Seedorf, have expressed their support for Vinicius. Additionally, the Real Madrid club reacted negatively to this news, even skipping the ceremony. However, Rodri seems focused solely on the award itself, disregarding external opinions. As evidence of his mindset, he celebrated his win with friends and maintained a public defense of his image.
Regarding the debate over whether Vinicius Jr. deserved the award more, Rodri prefers not to comment. He emphasizes that he worked hard for this recognition and believes the Ballon d’Or represents not just his achievement, but also for all of Spain and midfielders who have yet to receive such honors. “This is a memory I will cherish forever, the culmination of years of hard work and my passion for football. It’s a dream come true. I’m grateful for what this means for my family, for Spanish football, and for myself. This is the Ballon d’Or of all Spain,” he stated in an interview with AS. He is the first Spanish winner since Alfredo Di Stefano in the late 1950s.
However, Karim Benzema disagrees and publicly supports Vinicius, asserting that he deserves the award this year. He finds it absurd that Rodri received it instead. “Vinicius put in a tremendous effort, being pivotal for Real Madrid as they became champions of Europe. I believe he deserved the Ballon d’Or. I feel sad for Vini because he truly earned it. I hold no ill will against Rodri; he’s a good player, but Vini consistently delivers standout performances,” Benzema said. He noted that Vinicius was understandably upset upon learning just hours before the award that he would not win, but he believes Vini will ultimately receive the Ballon d’Or in the future.
