Chelsea achieved a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in a captivating match at Stamford Bridge during the Premier League’s early kick-off. The game featured several VAR interruptions, heightening the drama in a contest marked by dynamic play and key decisions.
The Blues opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a well-executed through ball that penetrated the Newcastle defense. Pedro Neto seized the opportunity to deliver a precise cross, allowing Nicolas Jackson to finish confidently. However, Chelsea’s lead was short-lived as Newcastle quickly responded. Alexander Isak capitalized on a chance, scoring from close range to equalize before halftime.
In the second half, Chelsea started strong, and their efforts paid off when Cole Palmer found space and struck the ball past Nick Pope, regaining the lead. Shortly after, Chelsea nearly added a third when Neto’s header hit the post.
This win propelled Chelsea to fourth place in the Premier League standings, at least temporarily, with Arsenal scheduled to play Liverpool later. Throughout the match, VAR played a role in three crucial moments that required clarification from Premier League officials.
The first VAR intervention came early, in the fourth minute, when Palmer believed he had scored. The on-field officials initially allowed the goal, but a review at Stockley Park deemed him offside, leading to the goal being disallowed. The Premier League’s Match Centre later stated that “Palmer’s goal was initially awarded, but the VAR confirmed he was offside.”
VAR was again utilized to review two close calls leading to Newcastle’s equalizer, where Isak’s goal was confirmed as legitimate. The Match Centre clarified, stating, “The referee’s decision was checked and confirmed by VAR, as Isak was onside.”
The final VAR intervention occurred late in the match when referee Simon Hooper awarded Chelsea a penalty after Dan Burn fouled Christopher Nkunku. However, VAR prompted Hooper to review the play on the pitchside monitor. After reassessing, he reversed his decision, concluding that no foul had occurred. The Premier League explained, “The referee initially awarded a penalty but, after VAR review, determined no foul was committed, leading to a drop ball restart.”
Ultimately, Chelsea’s determination and attacking style were crucial, enhancing their momentum as they advance in the league. Newcastle, while disappointed with some of the close VAR calls, can take pride in their competitive performance against a leading side.
