Jamie Carragher sparked a discussion on social media by questioning whether PGMOL chief Howard Webb influenced the decision to change William Saliba’s yellow card to a red during Arsenal’s match against Bournemouth. Referee Rob Jones initially showed Saliba a yellow card for a foul on Evanilson in the first half of Saturday’s Premier League match at the Vitality Stadium. However, VAR intervened, leading to the yellow being upgraded to red.

As a result of the red card, Saliba will miss Arsenal’s important upcoming match against Liverpool. Carragher, a former defender for Liverpool, hinted on social media that Webb might have been involved in the decision after he was seen on the phone in the stands during the game.

Following the contentious sending-off, Arsenal fans expressed their frustration, chanting against Webb and the PGMOL at the stadium. The red card added to Arsenal’s challenges, as the score was still 0-0 at halftime, and Mikel Arteta was already dealing with injuries to key players like Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka.

In response to the criticism, the Premier League released a statement outlining the reasoning behind the decision. It explained that VAR recommended an on-field review after concluding that Saliba had denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity, prompting the referee to change the yellow card to red. This decision further complicated Arsenal’s situation in what was already a tough match.
