Manchester United Poised to Renew Frenkie de Jong Pursuit as Barcelona Struggles with Contract Talks
Manchester United’s renewed interest in Frenkie de Jong comes as Barcelona faces challenges in securing the midfielder’s long-term commitment. De Jong, whose contract runs until 2026, has yet to respond to Barcelona’s recent renewal proposal, casting uncertainty on his future with the club. If an agreement isn’t reached by June, Barcelona may contemplate selling the Dutch player to prevent losing him on a free transfer.
United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, is eager to bring De Jong back, believing he could significantly enhance the team’s midfield. Their previous connection at Ajax bolsters United’s prospects, although they may face competition from Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain if Barcelona decides to entertain offers.
Barcelona’s financial limitations and the need to renew contracts for younger talents like Pedri and Gavi increase the urgency of the situation. Although the club wishes to retain De Jong, a lack of timely agreement on a contract extension could compel them to make a difficult choice, potentially allowing Manchester United to take advantage.
The January transfer window may lead to a fierce competition among top European clubs, including United, for De Jong’s signature.
