Former scout Mick Brown has disclosed that Liverpool is keen to finalize a new contract with defender Virgil Van Dijk, whose existing agreement is nearing its end.

Even with his future at Anfield in question, Van Dijk has begun the season strongly alongside Ibrahima Konate, showcasing his talent at the age of 33.

Under manager Arne Slot, Liverpool’s defense has excelled, allowing only two goals in seven league games, with Van Dijk playing a vital role.

Brown stated to Football Insider that Liverpool is eager for Van Dijk to extend his contract, given his status as one of the top defenders globally.

He pointed out that finding a suitable replacement for Van Dijk would be challenging if he were to leave. The futures of Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also in doubt, raising concerns about the club’s management of their contract situations. All three players have been instrumental this season, contributing to Liverpool’s position at the top of the league.

Van Dijk’s defensive leadership has been crucial to the team’s success, and his departure would be a significant setback.

While there have been rumors linking Salah and Alexander-Arnold to moves abroad, Liverpool has a strategy in place should Van Dijk leave.
