Although Ben Chilwell and Carney Chukwuemeka have been reintegrated into the first-team setup, they remain peripheral figures under manager Enzo Maresca, who has made it clear they are not likely to be regular starters.

Chilwell and Chukwuemeka were initially included in the group known as the “bomb squad” during preseason, which refers to players not in the manager’s plans. Regarding Chukwuemeka, Maresca reiterated, “Carney is a very good player, but with the number of players we have, we decided it would be better for him to go somewhere else, play 30 or 35 games, and prove himself rather than stay here and get fewer opportunities.” Unfortunately for Chukwuemeka, a move did not happen, and he remains at Stamford Bridge. Although Maresca has given him some playing time recently, he was not included in the latest match and hopes for more opportunities moving forward.

Given Maresca’s remarks, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Chelsea plans to sell Chukwuemeka in January. The club is actively seeking a solution to find him a new team. Despite joining from Aston Villa for £20 million in 2022, Chukwuemeka has struggled to establish a regular position in Chelsea’s lineup.

Romano noted that Chelsea was open to letting Chukwuemeka leave in the summer, provided a club could offer him significant playing time. Offers from clubs like AC Milan were rejected as they could not guarantee a starting role. As Romano explained, “Maresca has always been transparent with his players, and during the summer window, Chelsea wanted Carney to go to a team where he could feature in at least 38 games, not one where he would remain on the bench.”

Now that Chukwuemeka remains with the club but isn’t seeing consistent action, Chelsea is expected to renew their efforts to secure a move for him in January. Both the player and the club recognize that extended time on the sidelines is not beneficial, and discussions are already in progress to facilitate a transfer that serves everyone’s interests.
