Owen Hargreaves is optimistic about Manchester United’s prospects of winning silverware in the Europa League this season under Erik ten Hag. Following a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League and an early Champions League exit last season, United is back in Europe’s second-tier competition.

The club has a notable history in the Europa League, having triumphed in 2017 under José Mourinho. However, their last participation ended in disappointment with a quarter-final exit against Sevilla two seasons ago.

This season has been rocky for United, managing only two wins in their first five Premier League matches. This poor form has led the team to focus on cup competitions as a potential route to success. Hargreaves believes Ten Hag is eager to secure another European title, having already won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup with the team.

In an interview with *Metro.co.uk*, Hargreaves addressed United’s current situation, noting that in the Champions League, a lack of quality compared to elite teams can quickly reveal flaws. He is more hopeful about their chances in the Europa League, believing the squad has the talent to win it. He also suggested that a Europa League victory could strengthen Ten Hag’s position at the club.

Hargreaves compared United’s struggles to Arsenal’s past difficulties against Bayern Munich, recognizing that heavy defeats can undermine a team’s confidence. Nonetheless, he views United as one of the favorites for the Europa League title this season.

Reflecting on United’s uneven start, despite significant summer signings, Hargreaves stressed the need to regain momentum, positing that the Europa League offers a vital chance for players to achieve success. While the ultimate goal is competing in the Champions League, he thinks excelling in a tournament with a better chance of victory is crucial at this moment.

Looking ahead, young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is expected to debut in the Europa League against Twente on Wednesday. After spending much of the summer with England’s Euro 2024 squad, Mainoo is anticipated to play an important role in United’s campaign. Hargreaves is also hopeful that Manuel Ugarte’s arrival will bolster the midfield and aid Mainoo’s development.

Praising Mainoo’s composure and control, Hargreaves highlighted the need for balance in the midfield. He acknowledged that while United has individual talent, they need to enhance their collective efforts, particularly in regaining possession. He expressed disappointment that the team’s performances this season have not lived up to expectations, despite promising new signings.

Hargreaves believes Ugarte will strengthen United’s midfield, describing him as a dynamic player with excellent pressing capabilities. He underscored the necessity of team defending, starting from the forwards. Overall, Hargreaves remains hopeful that with appropriate tactical adjustments and improved team cohesion, Manchester United can make a serious attempt for the Europa League title this season.
