Cannot believe what I am watching’: Paul Merson left stunned during Liverpool’s game against AC Milan

Liverpool sought to bounce back from their recent loss to Nottingham Forest with a win in Milan on Tuesday.
The Reds kicked off their revamped Champions League campaign at San Siro against AC Milan.
On paper, it was a tough matchup for Liverpool, particularly given that Paulo Fonseca’s squad had secured a 4-0 victory over the weekend.
Following Liverpool’s unexpected defeat to Forest, the game started poorly for Arne Slot’s team when Christian Pulisic capitalized on defensive errors to score for Milan just three minutes in.
Nevertheless, Liverpool quickly took control in the first half, scoring two goals from set pieces to lead 2-1. After observing Milan’s decline, pundit Paul Merson expressed his disbelief.
Merson was shocked by AC Milan’s display. Despite the rocky start, Liverpool clearly dominated the first half at San Siro.
Mohamed Salah struck the crossbar twice, and Liverpool had several chances before Ibrahima Konate found the net from a Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick.
Although Milan started the match strongly, they allowed Liverpool to find their footing.
Before Virgil van Dijk scored to put Liverpool ahead, Merson remarked on Sky Sports News (17/09/24 8:25 PM) that he couldn’t comprehend the performance of the Milan team.
“Liverpool will win this game three or four,” the former England international predicted.
“They are a significantly better team. I can’t believe what I’m witnessing with AC Milan. It’s astonishing.”
While Milan was hosting fashion week, Liverpool’s start on Tuesday indicated they might face a tough challenge.
Following Saturday’s defeat, there were genuine concerns that Liverpool could struggle again throughout the full 90 minutes.
Pulisic’s early goal proved misleading for the Italian side.
They seemed to show Liverpool too much respect after taking the lead, failing to build on their advantage. Instead, Liverpool exhibited patience with the ball, waiting for the right opportunities.
Merson likely highlighted that this Milan team is far from those that once ruled Europe, a fair assessment. Nevertheless, it required determination for Liverpool to stage such a strong comeback.
