According to Erik Ten Hag, Antony has become “impatient” due to his limited playing time at Manchester United.

Antony has featured only once this season, coming on as an 89th-minute substitute in Brighton on August 25. He was expected to play in United’s 3-0 win against Southampton on Saturday, but Matthijs De Ligt’s cramp led to Casemiro substituting in instead.

Last season, Antony appeared in 21 of United’s 52 matches, and he did not start in any of their five pre-season games. Other wingers, including Amad, Alejandro Garnacho, and Marcus Rashford, have all scored this season, making it uncertain whether Antony will start against League One Barnsley in the League Cup third round on Tuesday night.

Antony is Manchester United’s second most expensive player after Paul Pogba. Acquired for an initial fee of £81.3 million from Ajax on the 2022 transfer deadline, Antony has scored only 11 goals in 83 appearances.

Garnacho was signed by Atletico Madrid in 2020, while Amad, deemed a promising talent, was brought in from Atalanta for a first fee of £19m shortly afterward.

“It’s professional football, it’s high-level football,” Ten Hag said when asked if Antony was struggling behind younger wingers. “These are the rules.” Players must compete for their spots. You select the XI with the best dynamism and chemistry. There are two players, and we are pleased with that.

“Two players have grown since their youth in the group, in the selection.” Antony must now return and he has the ability to do so. If he makes the right choices, he can compete with them.

Ten Hag detailed why Antony has been sidelined, attributing it to the high performance of his competitors. “The other players are very good, they contribute significantly.” We have Amad and Garnacho – both extremely effective. Rashford scored over the weekend.

“So he must prove himself in training, but the others are performing very well.” He needs to surpass them. Naturally, he’s impatient. He wants to play and is fighting to do so.
