Southampton’s head coach, Russell Martin, has conveyed a strong sense of optimism about his team’s prospects against Manchester United. His confidence is based on his analysis of various tactics that other managers have successfully used against United. With the match set to take place at St. Mary’s Stadium, Martin is firm in his belief that significant progress can be made, especially after Southampton’s tough start to the Premier League season.

Despite losing their initial three league matches, Southampton remains hopeful of a turnaround. The upcoming game is a critical chance for Martin’s team to get back on track and gain momentum. The recent international break allowed Martin and his staff to reassess their strategy and identify areas for improvement. This period of reflection has instilled a renewed determination to avoid further losses, particularly given the lackluster performance of Southampton’s attack thus far. Their only league goal, scored by Yukinari Sugawara in a 3-1 defeat to Brentford, underscores the urgent need for better offensive contributions.

Martin’s reliance on last season’s core squad has not yet yielded the desired results. However, the increasing pressure and the upcoming match against Manchester United might compel him to consider significant changes to his lineup and tactics, especially as Southampton seeks to break free from their poor form.

### Team and Injury Update

Southampton is dealing with several injury issues. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu remains out with a long-term Achilles injury sustained in April, leaving the team without their first-choice goalkeeper. Additionally, Kamaldeen Sulemana is unlikely to play against Manchester United due to an ankle injury from preseason. Although there were hopes for his return after a failed transfer to Ajax, Martin confirmed that Sulemana, along with Bazunu, is the only player officially unavailable for this crucial match.

Ross Stewart, another player under review, is gradually regaining full fitness after being mostly sidelined this season. The Scottish forward, who joined the club in the summer of 2023, has only made a few substitute appearances but has resumed training. However, he is expected to make his return to competitive play in Southampton’s Carabao Cup match against Everton on September 17th, rather than against Manchester United.

### Tactical Changes and Potential Lineup

Under Martin’s management this season, Southampton has mostly used a 3-5-2 formation. Given the team’s underwhelming performance and the extended preparation period during the international break, a change in formation could be imminent. A 4-3-3 formation has been suggested as a potential alternative, offering a more balanced and attacking approach that might improve Southampton’s competitiveness against Manchester United.

A significant aspect of this tactical adjustment would be the introduction of Aaron Ramsdale, the club’s £25 million Deadline Day signing, who is set to debut in goal and add stability to a struggling defense. If Martin opts for a back four, a center-back might need to be dropped. Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who has had a steady start to the season, could be the one left out if Martin chooses to keep the more experienced pair of Jan Bednarek and Jack Stephens in central defense, as they might be better suited to handling Manchester United’s potent attack.

In terms of full-backs, both Yukinari Sugawara and Kyle Walker-Peters have been standout performers this season, mainly playing as wingbacks in the 3-5-2 system. Since both players prefer the right side, Martin faces a dilemma on how to integrate them into a back four without disrupting team balance. He will need to decide whether to retain both or adjust their roles.

In midfield, Flynn Downes is expected to maintain his holding role, providing defensive stability. An intriguing option is 18-year-old Tyler Dibling, who has impressed in recent training and could be given his first Premier League start. His energy and creativity might bring much-needed dynamism to the midfield. Alternatively, Martin could choose Chelsea loanee Lesley Ugochukwu to provide additional defensive cover alongside Downes, allowing Dibling to play a more advanced role.

Joe Aribo, who has outperformed Will Smallbone since Southampton’s return to the top flight, could also be an option to add an attacking presence to the midfield, especially if Martin opts for a more aggressive strategy.

### Attack and Offensive Strategy

In the attack, shifting to a 4-3-3 formation might allow Adam Armstrong to return to his preferred position on the right wing. Armstrong excelled in this role last season with his pace and direct running. On the left flank, Ben Brereton Diaz is expected to feature, providing a goal-scoring threat. Cameron Archer, who scored twice in Southampton’s recent Carabao Cup victory over Cardiff City, might be given his first Premier League start as the central striker against Manchester United.

Southampton’s Deadline Day signings, Ryan Fraser and Maxwel Cornet, add extra attacking options from the bench. Both players bring Premier League experience and could play a crucial role in altering the game if Martin’s initial strategy requires adjustments.

As Southampton prepares for this important match, Martin faces the challenge of making effective tactical decisions to lift his team from their slump. The encounter with Manchester United could be a turning point in their season, with Martin’s tactical adjustments and lineup choices potentially influencing the outcome. The pressure is on both the players and the coach to deliver a performance that will kickstart their campaign and restore fan confidence.
