Barcelona Leads Race for Jonathan Tah as Manchester United Remains in Pursuit

Manchester United’s efforts to bolster their defense last season have yet to yield the desired results, despite significant investments. Their pursuit of Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite fell through due to Everton’s high demands, prompting United to turn to alternative options. The club managed to secure Leny Yoro and eventually signed Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich, although negotiations took time.

Jonathan Tah, the Bayer Leverkusen center-back, was among the players United considered. Tah, whose contract with Leverkusen expires in 2025, recently announced he would not renew his deal, making him available for pre-contract talks in January 2025. The 28-year-old expressed his commitment to Leverkusen for the remainder of his contract, stating his desire for a new challenge after a successful season.

Barcelona currently leads the race for Tah’s signature, backed by manager Hansi Flick, but they face competition from Premier League clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Chelsea. Tah’s standout performances last season, which included helping Leverkusen win the league unbeaten and keeping 21 clean sheets, have attracted significant interest.

With Barcelona seemingly in the driver’s seat, United and other suitors will need to move quickly if they hope to secure Tah before he becomes a free agent.
