The Premier League’s key Match Incidents panel delivers the final verdict on Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice’s red card contoversy incident vs. Brighton

The Premier League’s Match Incidents panel has stated that referee Chris Kavanagh “had no choice” but to issue a red card to Declan Rice during Arsenal’s match against Brighton. Rice, who had already been booked with a yellow card, received a second yellow for obstructing Joel Veltman’s attempt to take a quick free kick.

Despite Rice making only minimal contact with the ball, Kavanagh deemed that he had deliberately impeded the opponent. The panel supports the decision, noting: “Rice knows what he’s doing—it’s a light touch, but the referee has no choice once he sees it.”

As a result, Rice will miss Arsenal’s upcoming match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
