Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United could be under threat, with reports suggesting that he may be dismissed after just three more matches. Paul Merson believes the situation is critical, especially as half the squad is reportedly losing faith in the manager’s tactics.

Manchester United has already lost 10 of 21 matches this season, and according to Sky Sports, discontent is growing among the players regarding Ten Hag’s management. This issue was first highlighted by TEAMtalk earlier in November. Some players, including senior members, are dissatisfied with the results and training methods, and Jadon Sancho’s handling has only added to the frustration.

Manchester United is currently experiencing its worst start to a season in 51 years, and this has increased pressure on Ten Hag. Despite no official comment from the club, there are signs that the board may be reconsidering their stance. About 50% of the squad is reportedly disillusioned with the manager’s methods.

The next three matches—against Chelsea and Bournemouth at home, followed by Bayern Munich in the Champions League—are seen as decisive for Ten Hag’s future. According to Merson, failure to win these games could lead to his departure, with recent performances against Newcastle described as “embarrassing.”

Despite these challenges, Ten Hag remains determined to turn things around. However, BBC pundit Alan Shearer believes that Ten Hag’s job could be in jeopardy, particularly if Sir Jim Ratcliffe completes his acquisition of 25% of the club, as new ownership often brings changes to the management team. Both Shearer and Merson are skeptical about a quick solution for the club’s struggles, highlighting the deep-rooted problems within the squad.
