Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk could become the most HATED player after reportedly saying, ‘If I go there, I will make more money,’ as he prepares for a surprising transfer to a Saudi Arabian club!”

A well-known journalist has suggested that it’s “almost inevitable” that a key Liverpool player might leave Anfield without the club receiving a transfer fee. Currently, three of Liverpool’s first-team stars—Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold—are in the final year of their contracts.
*The Athletic* has taken a closer look at each player’s situation, and today’s spotlight is on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. Journalist Gregg Evans reports that Van Dijk remains fully committed to Liverpool, with his focus firmly on winning more trophies at Anfield. However, Evans points out that it’s rare for Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), to offer contract extensions to players who are approaching 34 years old, which Van Dijk will be when his current deal ends.
Evans suggests that the “most likely outcome” is that Liverpool will lose Van Dijk on a free transfer when his contract expires. From a business standpoint, FSG might be reluctant to extend the contract of a player already earning £220,000 per week, particularly as Van Dijk recently turned 33.
Despite these financial considerations, Van Dijk remains crucial to Liverpool’s success on the field and as a leader within the team. His commitment to maintaining peak physical condition, often using club facilities after hours, and his role in mentoring younger players highlight his ongoing importance to the squad.
The uncertainty surrounding Liverpool’s central defense adds another layer of complexity to the situation. With Sepp van den Berg possibly moving to Brentford for £30 million and Aston Villa showing interest in Joe Gomez, Liverpool could face a shortage in their defensive lineup.
If Liverpool were to offer Van Dijk a two-year extension, it would keep him at the club until 2027, allowing the club more time to plan for his eventual replacement. Even if Van Dijk leaves on a free transfer in three years, the transition might be smoother if a successor is prepared to take over as the team’s defensive leader by then.
