Martin Zubimendi has opted to stay with Real Sociedad, rejecting a potential transfer to Liverpool. The 25-year-old midfielder’s choice was confirmed on Monday evening when he informed Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, that he would not be making the £51 million move to Anfield.
As reported by Spanish journalist Jorge Picon, Zubimendi had initially approved the transfer to Liverpool just two weeks earlier. However, in a decision reminiscent of Steven Gerrard’s famous refusal to join Chelsea in 2005, Zubimendi ultimately decided to stay loyal to his boyhood club.
Zubimendi’s strong connection to Real Sociedad, his hometown team, was a key factor in his decision.
This isn’t the first time the midfielder has declined offers from major clubs, having previously turned down moves to both Arsenal and Bayern Munich. For now, his dedication to Real Sociedad remains steadfast.
