Virgil van Dijk gives worrying update on Liverpool future

The Dutchman is entering his second season as the Reds’ captain, but it could be his last, as his contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Last month, Van Dijk, who was signed for £75 million from Southampton during the 2017/18 season, stated that he had “no idea” about his future and would need to “consider his options carefully” going forward.

He has been adjusting to life under new manager Arne Slot and took part in the first of two friendly matches on Sunday, a 4-1 win against Sevilla.

Van Dijk spoke to the media afterward and was questioned about contract negotiations, confirming that there had been no developments.

“There are no changes at the moment,” he told reporters, according to The Independent.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah are also in the final year of their contracts, and a significant concern this transfer window has been Liverpool’s inactivity in the market.

Liverpool remains the only Premier League club yet to make a signing, although they are working on finalizing a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Van Dijk believes that new signings are necessary given the demanding season ahead but remains confident in the club’s strategy.

He added: “Clearly, I think we need to make some additions considering the length of the season. However, I trust that the club is working diligently behind the scenes and will make the right decisions to assemble the best squad possible for competing in all the competitions we are involved in.”

“That’s my main focus right now—having trust in the process and seeing how things unfold. I believe they are working very hard behind the scenes, and we’ll see how it turns out.”

Liverpool begins their new campaign under Slot with an early kick-off against newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday.
