MAN UTD ‘MAKE CONTACT’ FOR YOUSSOUF FOFANA ALONGSIDE ALVAREZ

Manchester United have reportedly initiated contact with French midfielder Youssouf Fofana regarding a potential move from AS Monaco, according to journalist Dylan McBennett on X. The 25-year-old is currently representing France at Euro 2024 and is unlikely to engage in transfer discussions until the tournament concludes for Les Bleus. However, Manchester United are keen on acquiring his services as they look to revamp their squad.
With Casemiro’s future at Old Trafford appearing uncertain, a new central midfielder is a logical addition for Manchester United. Fofana, whose contract with Monaco is in its final year, presents an appealing option. Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu has suggested that Monaco might be willing to part with Fofana for around £30 million, a reasonable fee for a player of his caliber.
Fofana’s performances over the past year have been impressive, making him a desirable target for Manchester United. He is known for his decisiveness and effectiveness on the ball, combined with strong defensive capabilities. These attributes align well with Erik ten Hag’s tactical approach, which emphasizes possession and defensive solidity.
Additionally, Fofana’s excellent injury record enhances his appeal. Apart from missing 15 games due to an ankle strain in 2019, he has been remarkably fit, only sidelined due to illness. This consistency in match fitness is crucial for a Manchester United squad that struggled with injuries last season, impacting players like Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, and Raphael Varane.
Erik ten Hag is reportedly close to agreeing to a new contract with Manchester United, and it is anticipated that he will have a greater influence on transfer decisions moving forward. Despite some previous less successful signings, Ten Hag’s focus on strengthening the midfield is evident with the interest in Fofana.
In addition to Fofana, Manchester United are also considering West Ham’s Edson Alvarez as a potential midfield reinforcement, as revealed by Fabrizio Romano on YouTube. The Mexican midfielder, known for his combative style and defensive prowess, could serve as a viable replacement for Casemiro should the Brazilian depart.
Romano explained, “Internally they are discussing several options in case Casemiro leaves the club and in case there will be room with FFP for a new midfielder. One of the names they discussed in the recent days is also Edson Alvarez from West Ham. Very expensive, very difficult deal, because for West Ham, he’s a crucial player.”
Manchester United’s pursuit of Youssouf Fofana and potential interest in Edson Alvarez underscore the club’s commitment to bolstering their midfield. As the transfer window progresses, securing a high-quality midfielder will be pivotal for United’s ambitions in the upcoming season. Whether it’s Fofana, Alvarez, or another target, these moves signal a strategic effort to enhance the squad’s depth and resilience.
