Liverpool fans directed their frustration toward another player after Darwin Núñez’s shocking miss in the 2-2 draw against Aston Villa on Wednesday evening.

The Reds dropped points for the second consecutive away game, following last week’s draw with Everton in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. Mo Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool, but Villa responded before halftime with goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins.

Trent Alexander-Arnold equalized just after the hour mark, and shortly afterward, Liverpool had a prime chance to take the lead. Núñez, who had just replaced Diogo Jota, found himself with an open goal but inexplicably sent his shot over the bar with his left foot.

Since joining from Benfica in 2022, the Uruguayan has struggled with his finishing, and manager Arne Slot was left stunned by the miss. However, some Liverpool supporters shifted the blame to midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, who chose to pass to Núñez instead of shooting himself after being played through by Conor Bradley.

Many fans felt Szoboszlai should have taken the shot, with one saying, “Still don’t get why Szoboszlai didn’t shoot.” Another added, “Núñez’s miss was terrible, but Dom’s decision was strange.”

A third fan commented, “He bottled it—lacked confidence and composure. Running at full speed with a defender alongside you, I’ve seen many players miss those.” A fourth pointed out, “There was a huge gap to the left of Martinez. The harder pass was to Darwin.” Another wrote, “Szoboszlai takes shots in training, but when it matters in a real game, he hesitates.”

**Arne Slot’s Response**

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler also believed Szoboszlai should have taken the shot, sharing his thoughts on TNT Sports.

However, Slot disagreed and defended Szoboszlai’s decision to pass.

“He made the perfect choice to pass it,” Slot said in his press conference. “It was a big chance, just unlucky. I was hoping he’d get another opportunity because a player like him probably wouldn’t miss twice in a row.”

Liverpool now prepare for a crucial clash against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
