Recent Updates on Chelsea’s Transfer Front, Unveiling Potential 2024 Free Agents as the January Window Opens

Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe might become available on a free transfer in 2024

Chelsea could explore the option of signing free agents in 2024, given potential constraints on available funds due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions. Since Todd Boehly assumed control of the club, an expenditure exceeding £1 billion has been incurred, accompanied by a significant wave of player sales, resulting in Mauricio Pochettino having an almost entirely revamped squad.

In the last summer transfer window, the club made 12 signings, with the acquisition of Cole Palmer on deadline day standing out as the most noteworthy. Pochettino is likely aiming to replicate the success of that move in the upcoming January transfer window, with the priority being the signing of a striker.

Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney have emerged as the primary names linked to a potential move to Stamford Bridge. On the defensive front, Jean-Clair Todibo and Ousmane Diomande have piqued the club’s interest. Outbound transfers are also anticipated, with Conor Gallagher, Ian Maatsen, and Trevoh Chalobah potentially available for transfer.

In light of these considerations, football.london has examined several free agents whom Chelsea might consider bringing to west London in the summer.

Kylian Mbappe

Chelsea is probably among several interested parties vying for the signature of Paris Saint-Germain sensation Kylian Mbappe. The French international’s contractual situation took center stage during the summer when he conveyed to the PSG board his reluctance to commit to a new deal.

In response to his stance, the club adopted a resolute position, asserting that he would be transferred to the highest bidder. Despite this, Mbappe stayed with the club, and while talks regarding a contract extension have occurred, no agreement has been reached. Consequently, there is a considerable likelihood that he could make a move to the Premier League in 2024, with Arsenal and Liverpool also appearing to be in contention for his services.

Mario Hermoso

Chelsea has undergone a significant revamp in its defensive lineup in recent transfer windows, and there could be another addition soon. The club is expected to have one of its players entering the free agent market this summer as Thiago Silva’s contract is set to expire, potentially necessitating a replacement.

One potential candidate for this role is Atletico Madrid’s Mario Hermoso, who, at 28, has been in outstanding form in recent months. Although a permanent transfer seemed likely, Atletico may now make efforts to retain him. Nevertheless, Chelsea has the opportunity to take the initiative by arranging a pre-contract agreement, as talks regarding a new deal with Hermoso are yet to be formalized.

Adrien Rabiot

Chelsea has expressed interest in Adrien Rabiot in the past, and such interest might be revived given that his current contract is set to expire in the summer. The midfielder inked a one-year extension with Juventus last summer, and there is no indication of another extension on the horizon, potentially opening the door for him to secure the long-rumored move to the Premier League.

Although Chelsea already has depth in the midfield department, Rabiot could be considered as a potential replacement for Conor Gallagher. Any funds generated from Gallagher’s sale would be considered pure profit on the club’s financial records, as the incoming replacement would come at no cost to Chelsea.

Luka Modric

Acquiring Thiago Silva has demonstrated shrewdness in the realm of transfer dealings, prompting Chelsea to consider a similar move with the potential signing of Luka Modric. Despite being 38 years old, the Croatian midfielder secured a one-year extension with Real Madrid last summer; however, indications suggest that his tenure in the Spanish capital may be concluding.

Despite his advanced age, Modric, an international for Croatia, retains the ability to command a game, and his extensive experience could bring significant value to Mauricio Pochettino’s youthful squad, mirroring the impact Silva has had over the past few years.
