With Sir Jim Ratcliffe expected to take over imminently at Man United, there could be some changes afoot at Old Trafford in terms of playing personnel.

Though the Red Devils haven’t been playing too well under Erik ten Hag throughout 2023/24, they remain on the fringes of the top six and, with some consistency and a bit of luck, there’s no reason why the second half of the campaign can’t be better.

In a recent press conference, the Dutchman expressed optimism, stating that once the club regains its injured players, it will become stronger.

However, some players are still eager to depart, creating opportunities in the team that were previously unavailable.

A notable challenge for United this season has been their performance in central defense. Injuries to key players and a dip in form for others have posed difficulties for ten Hag.

According to Opta Joe, their 15 goals conceded in the Champions League marked the highest for an English club, and in the 2023/24 season, only Royal Antwerp conceded more (17) across all eight groups.

Raphael Varane, a multiple Champions League winner, is reportedly dissatisfied with his current situation at the club, particularly regarding his playing position.

The injury to Harry Maguire had temporarily opened up opportunities for Varane, sparking rumors that the French World Cup winner might be seeking an exit from Old Trafford. Recently, with David Alaba sidelined for Real Madrid, the prospect of a return to the Santiago Bernabeu could be appealing for Varane.

Fabrizio Romano, in his Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside, mentioned that he currently has no information on Real Madrid’s interest in Varane. He added that Real Madrid is internally discussing the acquisition of a new center-back, but no decision has been reached yet.
